Just Cause 3 is an action-adventure game set in an open world that is entirely free to explore. As for previous installments, your main task is to wreak havoc on the battlefield using numerous tools. With that in mind, the best way to fight against the oppressor is to become the abomination of destruction. There’s no other way to oppose a dictator with an insatiable appetite for power.
This foundation had become the bread and butter of the Just Cause franchise. Sacrificing the story aspect in favor of causing massive chains of destruction is the series trademark. You actually feel like a superhero – Rico Rodriguez is a combination of Spider-Man, Batman, and The Punisher.
It’s a great title if you want to relax after a stressful day and you don’t want to delve into deep, multi-layered storylines. However, if you’re looking for a great-written story campaign, better look elsewhere. The main strength of Just Cause 3 is the mechanics and gameplay. Besides, that’s the main reason behind the game’s success.
The homeland of Rico Rodriguez, the main protagonist, is under the jurisdiction of General Di Ravello. The Mediterranean republic of Medici fell under the brutal control of an unpredictable dictator when Rico was still a child. His parents died during the coup, but he was able to escape and eventually join the Agency.
Several years after Just Cause 2, Rico decides to travel back home and dethrone the tyrant by joining the Medici Civil War. Now he’s working independently, without any restrictions or ties imposed by The Agency.
Di Ravello plans on using Medici’s explosive and magnetic mineral Bavarium, along with vast military power, to conquer the world. With Rico’s help, the rebellion finally stands a chance to reclaim what was rightfully theirs and save the world from inevitable destruction.
Just Cause 3 brings the best out of its predecessors in addition to new gameplay mechanics. As usual, you’ll be completing story missions and liberating towns. By spilling blood and spreading chaos, you’re slowly but surely going to turn the map from red to blue. Enemy forces are full of military bases, prisons, police stations, and communications facilities waiting to be taken down.
The game leaves you with many gadgets and vehicles to use when liberating the island. With explosive weaponry like missile launchers, tank busters, or shotguns, you’re a one-man army destroying everything in its way. Thanks to a massive variety of different vehicles, you can decide how to approach your enemy.
Will you attack from the sea using a speedboat? Rain death from above with a jet plane or helicopter? Or from the ground with turbo-fuelled sports cars and super bikes? There’s also room for a more stealthy approach. Use Grapple and Parachute to scale buildings, scan your surroundings and hijack vehicles undetected.
For the first time, hiding is a rewarding tactic and outstanding innovation to the series. Now you can spot somebody calling for backup and take them out accordingly. Unleashing chaos in the most creative and explosive ways sounds fun, but the game always leaves you with a choice to avoid repetition.
Learning all your tools is essential when participating in challenge missions. Compare your score with other players thanks to its online community features. Show the community how to sow chaos!
The unlimited exploration also adds to the freedom of gameplay. Swooping across the mountains with your Wingsuit and flying vast distances is a great addition. With enough practice, you don’t even have to touch the ground when using creative new ways of destruction.
There’s also room for completionists. Explore a Mediterranean island for many collectibles and upgrades to your weapons and vehicles.
