Total War: Warhammer is a turn-based strategy game with real-time battles between armies. For the first time, Total War abandoned historical settings in exchange for the fantasy Warhammer universe.
It combines the mechanics of its predecessors and uses Warhammer’s incredible world as a setting. While troop movements and formations have always been an inherent part of the series, you could play only as humans. Seeing Ceaser’s legion square off against Celtic warriors was a joy to watch, but that’s it.
Leaving historical settings brought unlimited strategic possibilities. Using magical powers with ferocious monsters at your command feels as fresh as ever. Warhammer fantasy battles combined with Total War’s mechanics never looked better.
Speaking of looks, Total War: Warhammer uses TW Engine 3, which is further enhanced for this installment. It offers great graphics fidelity and performance. It can show thousands of units on-screen without hiccups.
Karl Franz is the newly elected Emperor of the Empire. Soon after, a civil war emerges due to his fatal decisions. He must unite his fractured kingdom and assert his dominion. Meanwhile, the Dwarfs declared war against savage Greenskins.
Also, Vampires ruled by the Von Carsteins are leading an undead army to seize an Imperial throne. Yet in the north, the Chaos horde seeks to destroy everything in its path, corrupting all that stands in their course of domination. Will the Old World ever find true peace?
Total War: Warhammer offers four playable main factions. Those include the Empire (humans), the Greenskins (orcs and goblins), the Dwarfs, and the Vampire Counts (undead). Each faction has its own campaign.

Total War: Warhammer doesn’t stray away from mechanics introduced in the past. During campaigns, you still need to manage the economy, research technology, and refine your statecraft. Keeping armies well-supplied is crucial for your success.
Campaign mode tells the story of four core factions presented in-game. Each of them offers a different approach to given tasks. Unlike the previous installments, all races are distinct. Total War: Warhammer gameplay changes entirely with each faction.
For example, the Empire focuses on diplomatic bonds to further expand its territory. On the other hand, vampires have to use Vampiric Corruption and poison the land to remain stable. It all works together and requires a different play style for each playthrough. Which faction will be your first choice?
Legendary Lords known from the Warhammer universe play a critical role in battlefronts. Those magic users can handle entire battalions on their own, turning the tides of a losing battle. When you lose one of them, it’s more like losing a queen in chess. Having one near your front lines is very important to utilize his strength.
Multiplayer is the perfect place to test your tactical skills. Whether casual or competitive, it will hook you for long hours. It offers a co-op Campaign mode, 1v1 or team battles, and competitive, online matchmaking.
Playing in co-op and managing your assault while coordinating a siege with your friend is very satisfying. Total War: Warhammer is close to perfection in every strategic aspect. Every system and mechanic works perfectly, and your choices make all the difference. It’s a pinnacle of real-time strategy design and the best the Total War series has to offer.
